Elina Svitolina Announces Divorce From Gael Monfils

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has announced that she is divorcing her husband, French player Gael Monfils. The world number six, who is 32 years old, married Monfils in July 2021, and the couple shares a four-year-old daughter.

In a statement shared on social media, Svitolina explained that she needs to find her way back to herself and cannot do so while remaining in the marriage. She described facing this reality as the hardest truth she has ever confronted, as well as the most difficult thing she has ever had to tell someone she loves.

The news comes shortly after the 40-year-old Monfils retired from professional tennis earlier this month. His retirement arrived ahead of scheduled farewell appearances at the Paris Masters and an ATP 250 tournament in Lyon. Although he had received a wildcard to compete in Lyon this week, tournament organizers confirmed that he withdrew from the event due to personal reasons.
