LeBron James made his Philadelphia debut to help the 76ers spoil the New York Knicks' ring ceremony at Madison Square Garden. Tyrese Maxey led all scorers as Philadelphia held off New York's late fourth-quarter rally.

LeBron James commenced his record-extending 24th NBA season by guiding the Philadelphia 76ers to a season-opening victory over the New York Knicks, dampening the hosts' championship banner celebration.

Playing for his fourth NBA franchise at 41 years of age, James took on a facilitating role, dishing out seven of the 76ers' 28 assists while scoring 14 points. Tyrese Maxey led the game in scoring with 28 points. Philadelphia also received a strong contribution from Jaylen Brown, who arrived from the Boston Celtics in a July trade for Paul George. Brown recorded 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while center Joel Embiid registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Before tip-off, the Knicks celebrated their first championship in 53 years, earned last season against the San Antonio Spurs, by raising their third title banner to the Madison Square Garden rafters. Club legends Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, and Bill Bradley presented the players with their championship rings in a ceremony attended by notable guests such as Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Jon Bon Jovi, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Reigning Finals MVP Jalen Brunson addressed the home crowd, stating that the squad was ready to focus on the new season and hoped to bring the city another title as they attempt to become the league's first back-to-back champions since 2018.

Both teams endured a sluggish offensive start to the contest. James scored his first basket for Philadelphia on a layup late in the opening period to pull his team within one point. The Knicks established a 10-point lead on three separate occasions during the second quarter, but Philadelphia rallied to cut the deficit to four points heading into halftime.

The 76ers shifted momentum early in the third quarter when a defensive takeaway led to an alley-oop pass from Brown to James. A running layup by James shortly after put Philadelphia ahead 64-63. Following several lead changes, the 76ers seized control for good and turned back every push by New York, ultimately preserving the win after the Knicks trimmed the deficit down to one point late in the final quarter. Brunson paced New York with 21 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Reflecting on the contest with NBC, James explained that he still has plenty of room to improve as he develops rhythm following just over two weeks with the 76ers, though he expressed satisfaction with the team's overall effort, particularly on the defensive end. The four-time champion and all-time NBA scoring leader also noted that coming away with a win on another team's ring night provided a special feeling.
