The Oklahoma City Thunder earned a confident victory over the San Antonio Spurs, bouncing back from last season's playoff elimination. Victor Wembanyama struggled with his shooting despite a strong defensive showing, while a heated contest saw tensions boil over in the first half.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a commanding victory over Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, bouncing back from their painful exit against the same opponents in last season's Western Conference finals.

The matchup featured an offensive struggle for Wembanyama, who has been heavily favored to challenge Gilgeous-Alexander's two-year run as the Most Valuable Player. The Spurs big man connected on just one of his 13 field goal attempts, with his lone basket coming on a third-quarter alley-oop dunk. Despite the poor shooting, Wembanyama contributed on other fronts, finishing with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocked shots, relying heavily on 10 converted free throws.

San Antonio was led in scoring by Stephon Castle, who posted 24 points, but the Spurs could not withstand a focused Thunder team motivated by their previous postseason defeat. Following the game, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged the sting of having their title defense ended by San Antonio in a seven-game series last year, noting that losing makes the off-season feel longer, but emphasized that his squad was simply glad to be competing again.

Tensions flared between the two rising Western Conference contenders during the early stages of the contest. A physical altercation broke out in the second quarter when Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox threw Thunder center Chet Holmgren to the floor. The incident was ruled a flagrant foul on Fox and triggered a shoving match that led to multiple technical fouls being assessed.

Although San Antonio showed discipline to start the third quarter and managed to trim the deficit to seven points twice during the second half, Oklahoma City maintained composure and pulled away to secure the win.
