Australia's presence in the NBA stands at nine players on opening-night rosters for the new season, marking a decline from the 15 representatives recorded last year. The contingent includes established stars, developing young talent, and players navigating major injury setbacks. Several former league regulars have moved on to international competitions or experienced changes in national classification.

Australia remains well represented for the new NBA season, with nine players securing opening-night roster spots. While the contingent has dropped from the 15 players featured last season, the group includes a diverse mix of veteran performers, rising prospects, and All-Star talent.

Several familiar names have departed the competition ahead of the new campaign. Alex Toohey was waived by the Golden State Warriors, while Dante Exum was not retained by the Dallas Mavericks. Veteran forward Joe Ingles, now 38, signed a two-year deal in the NBL with Melbourne United alongside Luke Travers, and Lachlan Olbrich joined Japanese side Alvark Tokyo following a 37-game stint with the Chicago Bulls. Furthermore, former Boomers Matisse Thybulle and Duop Reath are no longer officially registered as Australians on league rosters, having been categorized under American and South Sudanese nationalities respectively.

Among the nine remaining Australians, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons contribute to a historic record of 19 international players with All-Star honours.

The Atlanta Hawks boast two Australian players, with Dyson Daniels entering his fifth year following a strong 2025/26 season. Daniels earned All-Defensive First Team honours in 2025 and Second Team recognition in 2026, finishing second in the league in steals and third in deflections. He took on an increased offensive role during Trae Young's absence, significantly boosting his assists and rebounds, and spent the off-season refining his shooting efficiency. Alongside him, center Jock Landale is competing on an expiring contract after being re-signed by Atlanta. Landale is projected as the primary backup to starting center Onyeka Okongwu, raising the possibility of the Hawks fielding an all-Australian frontcourt combination at some point during the season.

In Chicago, 24-year-old Josh Giddey enters his sixth season coming off career-best averages of 17 points, 9.1 assists, and 8.3 rebounds per game. Following off-season ankle surgery, the tall ball-handler will be tasked with directing a revamped offense under new team management alongside high draft pick Caleb Wilson.

For Dallas, Irving begins his 15th NBA campaign after missing the entirety of last season due to a torn ACL sustained in March 2025. Facing a gradual return, Irving noted that modern professional basketball has shifted significantly since his debut in 2011, explaining that aspects such as social media, gambling discussions, and mental health protocols have altered the environment and made it feel less human. He added that he does not view himself extending his career into his forties.

Injuries have also shaped the outlooks for other Australian players. Ben Simmons secured an opening-night roster position with the Sacramento Kings, triggering a contractual bonus, but will miss the season after tearing his Achilles during practice. In Indiana, 21-year-old Johnny Furphy is targeting a midseason comeback from an ACL tear suffered in February, with team management indicating his rehabilitation milestones have progressed well ahead of his long-term contract running through 2028.

Rounding out the list, center Rocco Zikarsky enters the second season of his two-way contract with Minnesota after spending his summer addressing defensive positioning and drop coverage. Shooting guard Josh Green begins a new tenure with the Utah Jazz on an expiring deal following an interrupted year in Charlotte, while Cleveland Cavaliers guard Tyrese Proctor is pursuing increased court time after using the off-season to build his physique and positioning himself as a primary rotational option in the backcourt.
