Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has praised teenager Rio Ngumoha following his standout performance in a thrilling European victory over Villarreal. The veteran defender noted that the youngster benefited greatly from working with Mohamed Salah last season. Van Dijk also emphasized that the exciting winger still has plenty of untapped potential.

Liverpool staged a dramatic fightback to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on Tuesday, overcoming a two-goal deficit inside the opening half hour to preserve their perfect record in this season's Champions League.

The visitors, managed by Inigo Perez—a close friend and former assistant of Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola—initially appeared to capitalize on weaknesses in Liverpool's high-intensity approach. However, 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha spearheaded the turnaround with his pace and technique, setting up Alexis Mac Allister for two goals. The victory marked the first time the six-time European champions have won from two goals down in the competition since their 2022 semi-final clash against the same opponents.

Following the match, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk highlighted Ngumoha's decisive impact, noting that the young attacker served as a constant threat throughout the game and gave the opposition defender a very difficult evening.

The Dutch defender also observed that Ngumoha is reaping the rewards of spending last season alongside Mohamed Salah before the club legend's departure from Anfield. Van Dijk explained that observing and learning from one of the club's finest ever wingers provided invaluable experience for the teenager, enabling him to absorb vital guidance and display his own qualities on the pitch. While acknowledging that Ngumoha has already demonstrated his talent this season, the captain made it clear that there is still much more to come from the young winger.
